Loops and Rides around Weaverville

How about some ideas on rides around Weaverville ...  



I am thinking this might be my Sunday loop ... Weaverville to Hayfork to Platina (burger) and back to Weverville skirting Redding and Whiskeytown Lake.

Thoughts and feedback welcome.

Just FYI...that is a full day's loop...so make sure you are ready for it.  And watch out for cops on 299.

Good point and have ridden the area. I need to fix the map. I had not intended to go that far on 36 but head north from Platina on Platina Rd .... fix it in the morning. My Ipad don't like edits like this ..

I am hoping for a shorter ride than that ...

I fell in love with the area about 8 years ago when we drove our Westfalia to Lassen, Whiskeytown and Weaverville. I had been to Whiskeytown lake years before, in one of those post adolescent hazes. So many good roads and as I google the smaller roads I see many of them paved.

Croak and I did 36 late last summer for the first time and loved it very much. I especially loved the roller coaster out of Red Bluff. Platina was an awesome stop for me. I did oogle the menu, the oddly distant proprietress and a local. Some gas for Croak's thirsty Aprilia and some air conditioning for over heating me after wrestling the guzzi.

 I thought Platina was kinda charming at close to 105F ... I have a pic somewhere. ... I see on the google earth that they what looks like a pool.  

I love California. Really do. Travelled a fair bit round the world ... but I relax in NorCal/SoCal/SanDiego .. yep. There I said it.

Crap. I was there late August/Sept last year.

I dare you to attempt this one...   . No doubt it would be the longest (all-paved) 300 mile ride of your life, with an uncountable number of turns. Probably undoable in early June due to snow blockage for the Forest Rd. 1 bit. Though you could still head up as far as you can go till snow blockage (There's some great views up on that road following the ridge), and then go back down and catch 299 back to Weaverville. Google maps not quite up to speed in this area for labeling Forrest 1 all the way through. I think the route is close to correct and it's much easier than it looks, when you're on the ground, to not get lost....

Sounds like it was the Wildwood Store that burned down , not the Platina Store with gas. Not that I know much about either, never stopped at either on multiple passes, always seem to be on the throttle and making time when I pass by...

Callahan-Cedarville loop is very nice. Some of the roads are a bit rough but still easily done, even by FJR drivers.

If you're planning a Weaverville-Hayfork-Redding loop avoid Platina Road. It's nice enough but you miss the best part of 36 into Red Bluff.

We were just there last summer on our way back from Canada... the two brothers that were running the place were really cool and it was a nice spot midway to stop... but they did say it was tough going...

HWY 3 north of Weaverville is very nice. A good all day ride is 3 up to Yreka, slab maybe 10 miles up to 96 and follow the Klamath back down to Willow Creek and 299 and back to Weavervillle. Fuel is good in Yreka and Willow Creek but of dubious quality at various spots in between if you need premium.

If you want an extended seat-time day ride take 299 out to the coast, have something to eat in Eureka or Fortuna, then 36 back to Red Bluff, 30 miles of I-5 to Redding, then 299 back to Weaverville and dinner.

Notice that these are pretty much the main highways of the area. They're well maintained and regularly traveled, though not heavily. If you want to get off the beaten path and don't mind some bumps, Deliverance locales and unique discoveries (somebody up there has Alfa Spiders littering their front yard but you'll have to find it) break out a detailed map and have at it.

HWY 299 NOTE: Caltrans is continuing it project of straightening the climb up the east side of Buckhorn Summit. That's west of French Gulch to the Trinity/Shasta County Line. It's sad but probably necessary as there have been to many trucks and cars going off the road and down into the canyons in poor weather. 299 is the major tie between the coast and central valley and is heavily traveled.

Might also consider Titlow Hill Rd. (NF-1) that runs between 299 and 36... Donna and I did that on our way home last year... it's some stunning scenery and off the beaten path... you do need to stay on your toes for dodging potholes in a couple of places...

Ooooo... me likey this one... haven't ridden 96 in ages and it is extremely tasty!! And Callahan-Cecilville too but a different kind of tasty...
