Here's my mental ramblings...

So I was taking a 2 week trip on the bike to Deals Gap and eventually W. VA, but then I crashed on the second day in North Carolina. Good thing is, I'm not hurt (except for pride and a bruised side) and I can still ride the bike (somewhat). The bike has a cracked frame where the shifter rearset attaches to the frame, so the bike is going to be totaled. I can still shift with some effort and I have highway pegs for the actual travel.

With the weather today and early tomorrow looking like suck (I'm in southwest Virginia right now), I've been trying to find a place to rent a pickup for a one way trip, but no one either rents pickups or wants almost $500 so it looks like another day in the rain...

Ah.  If a pickup truck's not available for a one-way rental, Plan B could be a small moving truck or a passenger car w/trailer.  BTDT.

Ok, sorry. Wasn't sure if you were able to get over that way or not. Sad

If you need a stop-over location when you get up toward Delaware, we've got space. Maybe I can help shore up the foot peg situation a bit or something, too.

Yeah, I'd try U-haul or some other such place.

Rental car companies don't like one-way rentals.

Same here in Annapolis if you're passing through.

Yep.  When Rue's SV650 broke down in WV she rented a small truck  and drove it one-way back to MD.

Yeah, it sucks.  When my stator went, I paid over $500 to get the bike home (truck rental and bought a loading ramp)...all because nobody would let me park the bike where it was until I got back with my own truck and trailer.

Enterprise has pickups you can rent.  You don't have to tell them why (not that they would necessarily care).  If you just want to get home and the bike is totaled, arrange with the adjuster where to leave the bike for THEM to deal with and get a econobox to drive home.

I work in Abingdon (well over a hour away), but I don't have a truck you can use.  Sad

I know people on another forum who are closer to you, but I'm not sure what you need (other than a pickup).

So now the question is: I-81 north through PA or I-66 over to DC and pick up I-95 all the way home

Rhetorical, right?  Anything involving 66, 95 and DC should be avoided pretty much all the time but in the rain, even moreso.  81 is all trucks and speed limits but you generally keep moving pretty well.  There's about 5 miles of construction above Winchester that might be annoying but nothing like the mixing bowl.

Well, it looks like there is marginally less rain on the 95 route. But I'd still avoid DC and stay on 81. Good luck and stay safe!

See, I'm the exact opposite. I've never had problems going around DC.  But, I think I'll stay on 81 and try to make it to Allentown tonight.

All I'll say about U-Haul one way truck rentals - have lots of cash.  I did it one way from Bowling Green, KY to a suburb of Detroit, MI and spent $600+ on rental fees for the truck and another $200 on gas.

I'm glad I took 81. This is what it looks like from Harrisburg

And thanks Chris for the offer to stabilize the rearset, but this is what you'd be dealing with:
