Capra Inn-Motel
521 W Main St
Hancock, NY 13783

(607) 637-1600    (Ines or Gene are usually on the desk, just tell them you are with STN, no rate code needed.)

Dates Friday SEP 20 through Sunday Sep 22, 2013

Group Rates below include tax
Single occupancy is $50/night
Double occupancy is $60/night
Triple+ occupancy is $65/night

All rooms have double beds.  They're motorcycle friendly.  The manager rides.  You can check out Sammy's Scouting Report here.  There's a gas station in sight.

There's good restaurant Lydias Cross Town Diner 570-635-5926 open for B,L,D within walking distance ~0.5 mile across river, also other options in town courtesy of Scratch33.

Rates are good through August 15.  Reserve your room now for 2 reasons.  There are only 16 rooms available; I already booked a double, and the Capra is popular with other bikers, fishermen and hunters.  And the other reason -- as Jeets said "Those of us who want to ride will be there no matter what."  But I am promising better weather than 2009.  Of course, it would be hard to be worse.  I guess it could always snow.

Cancellation - why would you want to - the Capra understands it happens.  They have a flexible policy for bikers if they feel they can rent your room so you can call up to the morning of your intended arrival.  Officially, they ask for 48 hours prior notice before check-in.

CAMPERS - Call Ines at (607) 637-1600 for details.  The owner has a piece of land just across the river - about a half mile away - where you can pitch a tent.  I understand there is also limited space where you can park an RV.

No rate code needed.

Just tell them on the phone that you are with the motorcycle group for the weekend of SEP 21, or say STN.

I gave Ines a link to our site.  Maybe she'll sign up, if you don't scare her off.

Or if you do try & book through their internet website, just enter a lot of commas where it says rate code.

It's that subtle touch of cynicism that gets me in trouble.

They don't have a website  I assumed you'd figure that out when the search came up empty
The clue was using commas as the rate code.

Your AARP & Choice Points aren't going to work here either.

I'll try to take my responsibilities more seriously in the future.

In all seriousness, I have found this site - LINKY Here - to be helpful.

PM me or post up here if you plan on attending and are not listed in the 2nd post of this thread

Unless of course you don't want 2B.   I haven't checked with the Capra for a while.
(No real need for me to check with them on who is registered, is there?)
Have to watch the Tour de France finish right now.

Things will work themselves out if left unattended long enough.

See you in September for an epic ride... Who's volunteering to turn their top box into a beer cooler, for the parking lot shit shooting session?

Guess I'll have to put the rack and box back on the GS.

Good idea.  I can only pack 2 six packs into the top case on the Wee.

Of course, don't have to walk too far in NY to find take-outs.

I just called.  All rooms have two double beds.  They have two rooms left.  One is a regular room and the other one is a room for a handicap.  The only difference with that one is the washroom / restroom is configured differently.  Anybody can rent it.

Jimmy, I'm booked for Friday and Saturday.

I'm seriously thinking about ordering a set of factory luggage from David Silver Spares (US operation), having them shipped to the hotel at Hancock NY in time for ESTN and then doing a parking lot install Friday evening, while the rest of the ESTN gangs looks on and drinks beer...

I've asked on VFRD what were the required tools, which I could bring with me.

Anyone want to help installing the rack? It's a do-or-die mission, because I'll need to have then mounted on the bike when I cross the border back to Canada (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more...)

I'll provide refernce material; a bike with racks already installed, drink beer with the rest of the STN gallery, and join in telling you why you're doing it all wrong.   Smile

Unfortunately, I must announce I'm out. This weekend just isn't working out as it conflicts with some family plans. Bummer.

I'll cancel my reservation as well. On the bright side, I'll hit those very same roads either the weekend before or the weekend after ESTN...

Shil, I'll send you a PM so we can figure out how your sunglasses, left at SNOB, can make their way towards the Centre of the Universe.

I just called the Capra Inn-Hotel to see if there are any rooms left and caught the guy away from the office.  He suggested I call him back in an hour and a half.  My wife (Michele) and I are in, if there are no more rooms we'll find something local. She doesn't ride with me she will be driving out, no reflection on my riding we're just getting old. She will spend the weekend sightseeing, exploring, antiquing, and/or otherwise shopping.  We are only a few hours away.

On another note I've been riding the Catskills and the areas all around them for more than a dozen years now, heck I worked just outside Hancock for a couple years, so if anyone wants I can put many routes together inside and outside the Cats in a heartbeat.  From sweepers to twisties and a combo of both this area can challenger all of us.

Oops, I just found the route thread and it looks like they are covered.

Edited to add I got someone's cancelled room.  Thank you.

Sure! Garry and I posted a couple routes. Mine is here. Feel free to comment or critique it—I just threw it together based on what looked good on the map (I know pretty much nothing about the Catskills.)

I'm into riding as many scenic backroads as possible—including goat paths if they're paved (beat-up pavement is okay as long as it's not all day long) or even some smooth dirt/gravel roads are fine (again, as long as it's not all day!). For example, in my route there's a big empty space called "Balsam Lake Mountain Forest" on Google Maps...I'd love to ride around in there, but have no idea what the roads are like?

As usual, looking at the maps, it's hard to tell which of those tiny roads winding right through the very heart of the Catskills are paved and which are dirt?

It has been a while Scott.  I'll add my .02 cents in for a couple rides.  I was out Saturday and one of the best roads, Frost Valley Rd, route 47, is in the process of being chip sealed.  Might be OK by the 21st.  I'm only an hour away so I'll make sure to check it out prior.  Also the last two times I rode the Cats I've been detoured each time for a bicycle group of a hundred or more doing their thing.

Looking forward to the weekend as I haven't done much group riding in a couple years.

Getting psyched.  I put together a Saturday route and some area info for those of you that don't frequent the Catskills.  Mornings are generally chilly in late Sept.  I've also included a string of some great roads that make up a full days ride.  The ride is 247 miles and the GPS says 7.25 hours non stop.  I figure doing the speed limits ( EEK!), eating lunch, breaks, and gas we should be able to do it in 8.5 to 9 hours.  Due to size constraints I have to post the ride in two halves, morning through lunch and lunch through the end of the day.

I have a full size pic if anyone wants a copy.  The GPS file is ready and I have included it here but I figure others may have some insight into road conditions and possible closures so I'll hold off for a few days before I finalize it (oops, the GPX file just goes over my 256kb limit so if you want a copy I'll have to Email it to you.  Believe it or not the Cats have not yet recovered from those big storms a couple years ago.

If your a fast rider and all you plan to see is asphalt you will love this route, if your a sightseer you'll love it even more.  Check the route out in Google Earth.  Inlove

We're going to leave Annapolis Thursday and taking a leisurely 2-day FUGAWI up to Hancock.   Need to scope out a town somewhere in northern PA with a nice B&B, restaurant, brewpub.

That's the one. I haven't been there in a few years...

If you head up that way, try and do 144 from State College all the way up through the Nat'l Forest.  Thumbsup  That is, if you're looking for the curviest road from A to B. There are several other nice roads in the area.

Mostly all new pavement.  It's like a racetrack now for the most part.

Is it Thursday yet?

+1   And patch a crack in the driveway so the contractor can seal coat it while I'm gone.

Got called for jury duty tomorrow.  No worry; I won't get selected.  I plan on telling the judge that if the ["f'ing"] cops arrested him, he must have done something wrong.  Maybe not what he got arrested for, but that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve to be punished for something; if not just for making me be there...

I reported for jury duty a couple of years ago for a trial starting  four days before the beginning of an annual vx800 pilgrimage. They mentioned before picking the jury that the trial would last "two or three days." So, when I was interviewed by the judge and attorneys I told them that I'd be happy to serve if picked but I hoped the trial would end in time to let me do my religious duty at the weekend for an event that had been planned for over a year. I got a pass...and the trial did run into the next week Lol true story.

Man, all I have to say is  Twofinger to you guys taking 4- or 5-day weekends for this! We leave tomorrow morning at 8am sharp.

Gotta do some bike maintenance this evening (change the oil/filter...clean and adjust chain, make sure I still have a reasonable amount of front brake pad wear left). Can't wait to ride 2-up with the new, stiffer rear spring!  Bigok

We're probably going to head north past Clearfield, take 144 all the way to Rt.6, then head east on Rt.6. It'll be a long day of riding...but hopefully a good one. Probably won't arrive in Hancock 'til 7-8pm (so don't count on us for dinner...unless we put the hammer down to get there by 6).

Slight possibility that I'll be a drive-by participant.  Family obligations in eastern MA will keep me here through mid-afternoon on Saturday.

Is there still riding planned for Sunday AM?   Or are most planning this as getaway day / return to the real world?

Got all my routes loaded.  After a couple hours in the office Friday morning and a tire change right after that I'll be ready to leave.  It helps that I'm only three hours from Hancock.

I also wanted to share with you' all that the routes I posted up on page 4 of this thread are pretty darn rocking.  I've been a neighbor of the Catskills since 1995 and have been riding her ever since.  There are other good roads too but if one was to string together their favorites then these are mine.  Definitely worth riding and definitely a great mix of technical, twisties, and sweepers.

My Saturday ride is a trip up Route 8 into the Adirondacks to where it intersects with Route 10.  Then ride Route 10 back to Hancock.  I think it's mostly countryside and sweepers but with a radar detector sweepers can turn into twisties.

See you all Friday night wherever the beer is.  Smile

I'll be following your route Saturday - in the rain if current reports hold true - with one little side excursion to the EYE; down CR16 from Hunter area towards West Saugerties.  Not much of a road, kinds reminds one of WV 80 without the sharp corners, but it's something of a curiosity.  Hope there's a six of Saranac left.   Beerchug

I tell them I'm for capital punishment. Works every time.

Foggy morning here in Wellsboro.  We had dinner last night at the Wellsboro House - great place, lots of interesting beers on tap and they'll be brewing their own stuff shortly.

Will post a short ride report and 5-6 pictures in the Ride Report thread Saturday or Sunday.

Yeah, I'm fine. My shoulder might need some time to get right. Thanks to everyone who helped me out, especially Shil, Scott, Scott, and Jamie (and Fred and Mike of course). First crash, pretty humbling. Not exactly sure what happened but I know it was preventable.

My bike isn't totaled but it needs work, the handlebar and wheel aren't pointing in the same direction. Still not sure how I'll get it home.
