Ok, longtime STN'rs already know the deal. For STN newbs, this ride is an attempt to get NorCal and SoCal riders together for a last 3-Day-Weekend-Blast of the South Sierras. Get your Friday off work, get your ass up to Three Rivers, the Lazy-J Ranch as twisty and creatively as you can, for Friday night meet-up festivities, and whatever we decide from the limited restaurant options in Three Rivers.
As far as getting there on Friday, and your ride home on Sunday, the Three Rivers location is mostly considered a 'central' meeting point for people coming from L.A., S.F., or SAC. The most direct route is slighty shorter using Los Angeles as a departure point, only 200 miles. Bay Area or Sacramento more like 250 miles. Though, will post up traditional mostest twistiest Friday ride up from LA which comes in at around 330 miles. I believe pretty close to total mileage for twisty routes from Bay Area or Sacramento and they would come in around the same. Riders that join from San Diego get a pat on the back for their extra effort, Eureka riders attending get two pats
Weather permitting, everyone joins in for a Big Saturday Ride of some of the best of the local roads and scenery, returning back to 3 Rivers for the adios dinner festivities. The Saturday ride is slinky-style, ride your own ride. Full group recollects done a few times along the way at major turns, otherwise everyone is looking out to keep the rider(s) behind on track, where the rider in front of you did the same. In that manner it's still a 'sort of' group ride, but definitely not Cruiser-group style, where everyone is riding in close proximity to each-other, nor Squid-group style where inevitably riders end up trying to match the pace of the rider in front of them, and stop 'riding their own ride' in the process. Eh, just to be clear, for those that fear, group rides...
Here's what I'm thinking for the Saturday Ride. I trimmed about 50 miles off the route we did last year where we went all the way to Bass Lake and then serious forest road climbing up and over the the mountains and hooking back down Mammoth Pool Rd towards the return. Though the total mileage for that route didn't seem too bad (325ish), I think for the total turn count and major variable road surfaces, most were ready to be back at the hotel by the time we got to the bottom of Mammoth Pool Rd., including myself.
Looking forward to this Huntington Lake loop 275ish miles. A little more comfortable length for the types of roads included. Might actually, for once, get back to the hotel before Sunset
. Looking forward to the back-roads route from Shaver Lake up to Huntington I've only done once before, serious steep climb up sketchy barely paved narrow road complete with 1000+ foot drops and no guard-rails if you f'k up.

Anyone on the fence about this ride should get off the fence and on your bike. I have nothing but fond memories of the two
B4theSnowFlies
rides I've attended. Timing usually conflicts with work for me or I would have made more of them. You WILL have a great time with some great people while riding spectacular roads.

We've frequently had people with small tanks, and never had an issue other than the time when someone broke the slinky, and my neighbor Mikiel ended up lost, and on fumes with the Triumph. He did make it to fuel with Frank's help, but wouldn't have gone another mile. Good times.

Yeah, if you got at least a 100 mile tank-range you should be all good. Even if you were down to something like 80-mile range, it's still possible to accommodate. Just let us know your needs, no worries...
I remember one trip where I was dicking around with new route going from Trimmer Springs up Pine Flat Road, to get a good view of Pine Flat Dam. Pine Flat road went through in the virtual world of gps maps, but even after finding a way around the long-since broken bridge and doing a little dirt to see you can get across the river/stream, still there was a closed gate to get back onto Elwood road after the relatively easy river cross I found . Any-case I think many on that day pulled up to the nearest gas station on fumes, including myself. Good times indeed!
Here's the longest route (107 miles) where you won't cross a gas station 'exactly on the way'. There's options to go a mile or two off the exact route for more gas. As always, nobody cares, to go a mile or two off track for a re-fuel, though they may care, if you didn't speak up and end up 'running out' of gas in the middle of nowhere...

Very astute remark right thar!
I'm calling it, and either your in or your out. There is no rescheduling, other than if it's fookin pouring down rain on the day of the big Saturday ride, I will indeed hunker down in my motel-room/cabin and watch movies all day. There's no fun in riding twisty roads, in the rain, in my book... ;p
Hey, I'm burning a good deal of vacation daze to get off on the Laguna Seca WSBK races, end of September, this is just a slight add-on.
And if you think I'm wacky, you are certainly short for getting the invite for December tour to Monterey ( inviters obvious for long-time
STN'rs , but obscured...)

I certainly remember a very wet ride up to Three Rivers a few years ago., but I believe that was an early Nov. ride. The rest of the ride was beautiful even if the passes were closed.
You place your bet, and deal with the result.

Getting rained on for this ride is just part of the fun!
Though I can't help but notice it hasn't rained on the years I haven't been able to attend. So maybe it's just me.

I certainly remember that ride. Two of my friends bailed from there Tehachapi , escorting another LABiker who had blue-lips at that point, showing up with summer-gear, and enduring the winter-style down-pour.
It was not a good option at the time, they followed the flow of the winter downpour all the way back to the 14 and near all the way back home. Still, tho I may call them wussies, for bailing out before Ahhhhh! , of crossing the next mountain pass where sunshine came through, I give them reps for saving the life of the guy that was about to die from hypothermia....

Yeah Heinee and Hein'et ya'll still in? Book your room yet? I think you were the only other people that actually claimed you where 'in' , besides my Canadian brother the Bradmeister. A few random threats from others in this thread. Got some other random threats from the LABiker crowd and other random friends that sometimes ride motorcycles. I'm thinking it'll end up with a nice group in the 8 to 10 range when all the dust settles...
Here's the long range forecast, and we all know how rock-solid these 2 1/2 week in advance forecasts are. No need for rain gear, for sure!

Car? Sorry, I'm not familiar with the term. Sounds a lot like 'my dog ate my homework' to me...
Ahh well, looks like I'm flying solo this time, Leah's out, has to work, so it's not like I'd have seen a lot of you anyway...
Haha, reminiscing on some great V-Strom vs V-Strom, neck and neck duals (or should I call it, tire-wasting competitions), from back in the good 'ol days on some of the same roads.
One particular ride is coming to mind, though I have no idea what ride this was or how many years ago. I just remember traveling North on 49 'Little Dragon' section approaching Coulterville. I think you were a little worse off than me, but I believe we were both drifting the rear a bit on the last few turns coming down into Coulterville. Good times Brotha! , Good times...
Anyway, you'll be missed, and hopefully you can make the next one....

Those are still some of my favorite rides. I might still have the video you took on my old PC..
I think that was also the ride we discovered we could drag passenger peg on a V-strom while ripping down the mighty 190 into Springville
very
good times those were
..and then there was the C14's ripping around Sporterville..
I think back on those days a lot. Anyway, I put some Pilot Powers on the GTS for the Weaverville trip last month..hee, hee Some of that old mojo worked it's way out

Yeah the weather is looking great, and the Duc is on the comeback trail. A few things left to correct, but she's perfectly rideable at this point.
The VFR, and I are ready.

I think that was also the ride we discovered we could drag passenger peg on a V-strom while ripping down the mighty 190 into Springville
Isn't 3 Rivers a long way from the 190??

Define 'a long way'. Even if you take the boring route, it's less than 56 miles; if you take the more interesting but slightly goaty route - that is Yokohl Valley Road - it is 46.3 miles.

Ok checked the map......not that far......that 190 is my favorite road in Central California, fantastic banked cambered curves all the way up the mountain.

Ok, this might be the last call for this last ride of the season (talking 'bout the high passes here, otherwise there is no season for Socal riders) ....
I thought I hooked up a pretty good group, then everyone drops out in the face of excellent weather.
My close friends all have some excuses, mostly involving marriage and kids. Labikers, I don't know, very few interested anymore and some retired from moto-riding.
Some here said they're interested and then don't even reply back to say they're out...
Eh, somewhat discouraged here. Do I smell bad or something ?
Any-case for the few So-cal peoples... meet at Sand Cyn Denny's for breakfast 8:30 am , Depart 9:30 am,
Here's the modifiable along the way route up...

Thanks but we are all 'in the know'.
Anybody who needs to know can PM the ride leader - because you don't pile onto a three-day ride without contacting the organizer, right?

Naw, no pm required to join if anyone gets a wild hair to call in sick to work on Friday. Though if they can't find Denny's by looking at the map link just posted for Friday ride, probably better they don't join. Point A is pretty much stabbed into Denny's rooftop.

Excellent ride in all respects. Probably perfect number of 3, when we hit the sammich shop at Shaver Lake, can you imagine the log-jam if there were more? lol
First time evah! , to get back to Lazy J before sunset, I think 1 or more hours prior to sunset on this run. So there's something to be said for the small lean group. Still miss the big group for after ride festivities, but I was so tired still spinning the clock, wouldn't have made much difference for me.
Viffergyrl hooked up the mad bbq spread while we were gone riding (nursing a sore shoulder, not quite up to the all day ride). That was quite awesome too!
Also, I must say M.Brane is one cool cat...
I have one friend that I've been riding with since MC licence (15-16 years old), he's ridden probably 100k less moto-miles than me since then, but we still just mesh when running up the twisties. I guess you could call him my wing-man. It's not like I'm thinking I can loose him, but also it's not a race, and he never goes to pass me. Still, the dynamic leads to mostly max throttle all the time, on all those road sections it's a pretty sure bet no cops. If I can't see him in my rearview mirrors, it's because he's that close to be out of range, turn head to sight
.
This sort of buddy buddy close riding, M.Brane would have no part, even though I baited him a few times. And good for him, as 'Ride Your Own Ride' is always best. Then pulling back for a while to see if anyone in sight behind (nobody in sight), ehh fook it , I'm gonna 'rail it' to the next turn, and wait for those slow fookers! Then, wait. what? He shows up, 'one minute' later...

Thanks for the thumbs-up brotha. I don't often like to run at go-to-jail speeds, but it's fun sometimes when conditions are right. Your Duc, and riding style are better suited to ripping up the rough stuff. The VFR shines when the road is relatively smooth. She can handle the rough stuff I just don't like to beat her up too much.
Steve is no slouch either on the colossal K16. There were a few times I was surprised to catch a glimpse of him in my mirrors.
I know I've been following you when my MPG drops into the mid 20s. Good times.

Yeah, there was little time for picture taking up at the front, and since there were only 3 of us on Saturday, and we were all at the front... well no pics there
. I took a shitty cellphone picture here and there between Friday and Sunday, nothing really worth posting. Also, I'm used to an actual good photographer or two to show up in the mix, ala Bluepoof among others, to take care of the highlight pics; while I'm busy wasting tires for no good reason, other than it's fk'ng fun...
.
Surprisingly for this run, the highlight for me was the road out that viffergyrl called, and it wasn't a 'go-fast, super-twisty, blast-outta-every-corner-exit' road. More of a paved mountain trail, and a nice change of pace to end the three-day weekend. I've ridden that road once before about 5 or more years ago going the other way but remember nothing of it. I think it was maybe raining on that run and all the awesome views were obscured, and mostly busy just trying not to crash. Anyway, referring to Portuguese Pass/ Forest Road 23S16. Great Majestic Mountain Views, High Meadows, a sprinkling of Aspens or whatnot trees starting to turn color, all along this middle of nowhere road with nobody else there. I took a photo or two along the way, but ran across this pashnit page which I think is currently a freebie with pretty much the same photos I took, only better, in virtually the same weather conditions.
http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/Road23S16.htm
Here's a pretty cool short video about the area, that includes a run of part of 23S16 at the end. Wish they had featured more video of the roads, and less of the side attractions. Still, I didn't know you could ride out to dome rock from Great Divide Hwy, will definitely check that out next time..
