I'm not sure I would like the riding position now that I look at it from that angle. I prefer to be on top of the bike rather than in it. But it will be worth throwing a leg over for sure.

...a Japanese manufacturer might take the motor, castrate it to about 110 hp and stick it in a cheaper, heavier chassis with low-spec suspension and brakes and slice an ‘R’ or two off the name. That’s not how Aprilia roll

Neil Johnston needs to do a review on the Super Duke; why? See below.

KTM RC8 - Poetry as Bloodsport by OneWheelDrive

This really does sum up how I feel about my RC8 -- and I have the new, gentler twin spark. Love the review, every time.

Sure looks similar to the new Z1000 silhouette, shapewise.

It's not like the current generation Z1000 and 990 Super Duke are all that different in appearance.

The specs are astounding.  EEK!

Quote
At EICMA last year, they called it “The Beast” and with 177hp (132 kW) coming from the 1,301cc v-twin engine, we are inclined to agree.

As svelte as it is powerful, the KTM Super Duke 1290 R tips the scales at 417 lbs dry, and comes with a ride-by-wire throttle control system, along with traction control and ABS that can be disengaged, as A&R also predicted.

Using the KTM RC8 R engine as its base, the Austrians have bored the 75° v-twin out to 108mm (+3mm), with a stroke of 71mm (+2mm), which in addition to the horsepower boost, helps give the KTM Super Duke 1290 R a peak 106 lbs•ft of torque, with 74 lbs•ft available at just 2,500 rpm.

A motorcycle with a 1300 cc V-twin (sounds more like a cruiser, right?) that pumps out almost 180 hp, 106 lb-ft of torque and weighs only 417 lb dry?  And look how tiny it is!  Are you kidding me?

Wow.   Cool

Leave it to KTM to come up with this.    EEK!

And yet...is this much power and torque just more useable in a sportbike package?   As an ex-Tuono guy I can confirm that over 120 mph isn't really practical for any length of time on a naked, at least for a girly man like me.

At normal street speeds a bike like the Hypermotard or V-twin Tuono or even KTM's SMT has plenty of thrust even though encumbered with a mere 70 ft-lb of torque.

I realize that this bike is not about logic, though.   Bigok   It's fantastic that there's a manufacturer with the confidence and attitude to build the 1290 Super Duke.  We live in amazing times.
