I see the past few years have been in Montana, So. Dakota & Arkansas?

So is there a pattern to this and were there any in the previous decade?

Where does one go to find the history of the ST.net National?

It rotates between four locations, same week in June every year. Well, at least that's the plan...

I wonder what the plan is for 2014, since we skipped 2013? Still Colorado or does it go back East?

From the general info thread...
Location The National is on a 4 year rotating location schedule
2009 - Colorado (it was in Gunnison, but no definitive town is set)
2010 - Eastern USA (floating location)
2011 - Custer, South Dakota
2012 - Eureka, Arkansas
etc...

Doesn't that mean 2014 is Colorado or Eastern USA?

Since the western folks didn't follow through with anything last year , 2014 is in the east, ( hey you had your chance) location TBD.
My picks if given a choice would be somewhere in the smokies, West Virgina or  EEK! the Catskills. Beerchug

Indeed.  If you want something to happen and people to show the east is the place to be.

I'd vote for the Smokies area simply because WV is getting a little stale (if that's possible).  Plus 80-90% of attendees will end up going through WV to get to the Smokies anyway.

If you go far enough west, yes :-) Actually, that area where southeast KY, western VA, and TN meet is polluted with good riding.

So if you can commit a week of vacation plus the adjacent weekends, that gives you three days to get there (Sat/Sun/Mon), three days to be there (Tue/Wed/Thu) and three days to get home (Fri/Sat/Sun). You can hit a lot of great riding areas on the way to/from.

I wouldn't know anything about that. Nope, not at all. (Check my blog.)

OK...shameless plug for my most recent ride reports out of the way  Bigsmile - and yes, I know Day 6 still needs to be written! - I would say Smokies, too.

I can't say that I blame him. A lot of work goes into planning a National and a lot of people aren't happy with what does get planned. Last year someone tried to spearhead it and there wasn't enough interest. We set up the rotation to give everyone a fair shake at getting to one at least every four years, but I guess that isn't enough.

It's a National event for people who proclaim to be sport-tourers. If it needs to be planned around the six people willing to participate, then so be it... Shrug

And I think both of you are taking the comment out of context, nothing came to be last year , so do we let the west try again or move to the next slot in the rotation?? Maybe more than 6 are willing to participate if it moves east, I think Both of you are being a bit touchy for nothing, my 2 cents Rolleyes

I'm not touchy about anything.  The Nat'l in the West was a FAIL,  time to move on.   I'd say it's the east's "problem" now.  Good luck.  In 3.5 years we'll get another chance.

Well if you moved it as far east as possible in the US, it would be the Aleutian Islands, which would be convenient for the west too.  Bigsmile Riding sucks though.

Kentucky is good but I don't think the area would
support a multi-day event as well as places like
Maggie Valley, NC or Johnson City, TN could in
terms of venues, food, roads etc.

Probably would depend on the kind of commitment there is to the event.  If you're talking 100+ bikes then that may be the case. Up to about 50 you could probably find an accommodation somewhere.

During the week the traffic isn't too bad in Maggie Valley. It is choked with loud pipes most weekends though. If you like tight twisties there are other places with NO tourist traffic in the area. Just sayin'

+1  I loath the roads between Deal's Gap and Boone, NC on weekends.  So many people have 2nd homes in this area and the roads just get bogged down.

The Maggie Valley Inn and Conference Center came back with the following:

Quote
We have 100 rooms with an onsite restaurant, lounge and poolside tiki bar.  We have ample paved parking that can accommodate trailers as well.  We also offer covered motorcycle parking and also have on property the Maggie Valley Motorcycle Welcome Center.  The BP Gas Station is next door as well.

They can do $75/night for the Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday nights of the National week.

+1  I loath the roads between Deal's Gap and Boone, NC on weekends.  So many people have 2nd homes in this area and the roads just get bogged down.

Well this year turned out to be rather low in millage (less than 8k) and time out on the road.
I would enjoy a ride out to the east (well maybe over the rockies, screw the "flat states") to make up for a poor 2013 riding season

So east of the big river it is, Ya'll on the right side better plan well

I'd make a trip to Maggie Valley if it's held there.

And not to hijack the thread, but, I read the news about the site being sold. I didn't get the impression there was a plan being put together to "improve" the site or or "enhance the forum experience" with anything new. Perhaps I missed a thread? And now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Just chiming in—I'm totally up for Maggie Valley—as long as we can avoid Dbags all over the backroads (e.g. as long as the backroads are EMPTY during the week). I've been looking for an excuse to take Jamie all the way down the BRP.  Bigok

And I think both of you are taking the comment out of context, nothing came to be last year , so do we let the west try again or move to the next slot in the rotation?? Maybe more than 6 are willing to participate if it moves east, I think Both of you are being a bit touchy for nothing, my 2 cents Rolleyes

I say move it east for this year and stay on rotation.
Part of the problem IMO is WCRM is the week prior to the national. Very few can or want to do both in that two week span. In the future (2015) I'd like to see the WCRM moved to the end of summer so people could do both.

Do we need a poll to select a location?

Or are we as a group pretty much agreed on Maggie Valley?

Mrs CB – to whom we are all indebted – reported that the Maggie Valley Inn and Conference Center has 100 rooms at $75/night for the Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday nights.  This could be the place as far as I'm concerned.  I started been putting out some feelers on a location.  I like to have lots of options and a diversity of choices.  So I made a sampling of different locations.  Here is what I come up with so far.

SHIL posted up Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park, and I figure anyone who will ride a few 1000k on an SV (or a glow-in-th-dark dual sport) for a couple of cold brews – which he could easily get at home – deserves due consideration.  I like the location myself, although it may not be popular with the larger group because it’s 250 miles from the Dragon.  Which means you’d have to ride the Dragon before or after the meet.  I haven’t spoken with the group manager yet, but they have 36 large rooms and 5 cottages with an average nightly rate around $80.  On the small side, and not a lot of options nearby for food, gas and overflow.  Might make a nice stop-over on the way down.

The Castlewood Inn in Maggie Valley – I liked the look of the parking lot and I think we could fill the place and there are plenty of motels nearby if we overflow – would give us a rate of $60 night.  They have 30 rooms available.  Downside is they have a 7 day cancellation policy or you get charged for 1 night.  Not a good option for many who have unpredictable work schedules.

The Microtel Inn in Robbinsville NC has a reputation for being motorcycle friendly and has 50 rooms at $60/ night average rate.

The Red Roof Inn Johnson City TN has 115 rooms at $60/ night average rate.

Thoughts?     Don't hold back now; let the bitchn' begin.

While I appreciate the effort, you'll be hard pressed to
beat the Maggie Valley Inn for venue, location and price.

And BTW, it's the 16th thru 18th of June.

Yep, I saw where you finally made the sale. Congrats Smile

I'm giving some thought to laying over a night at Buckhorn's either on the way down or back if I have the time.  I could twist the 250 miles in-between into 4 or 500 mile ride in a round-about way.  Assuming, of course...
