I thought Weaverville was a good location even though it was blistering hot on that weekend (better than rain) and our motel room was a dump.  The riding was great,  there were lots of options in every direction for day trips.

I don't think we've done one in the S. Sierra. Porterville is a reasonable base, but it gets hot earlier than up North. Early to mid May would work.
How about Quincy?  Orville-Quincy and Quincy-LaPorte are very neat and it is cooler
I would be fine with Fortuna or Weaverville as well but would prefer an earlier date.

Quincy/Chester has been the site for the .5 meet a couple of times before, and was well received. I would go back there with no hesitation.

Agree, I would rather risk hot weather than rain, Weaverville was a broiler this year but I still managed a couple of very nice rides by leaving early in the morning.

I have stayed in Eureka several times as there are numerous cheap motels. However to only pub with decent food that I have found is Lost Coast Brewery - it is good but usually quite crowded , so might be difficult if we actually got a turnout.
Fortuna motels are a bit more expensive, but the Eel River Brewery next door has an outside area that can be reserved that can handle a crowd and beer/food are good.

in early May without any snow melt freezing or causing a problem as one rounds a corner? I have been told to wait til later in June to use all of the mountain passes - BUT this could be the higher ones.

That will depend greatly on this winter's weather. At this point it's simply too early to predict.

Real nice folks that run the place and they are moto friendly. I'd say mid to late June would probably be good weather wise... if you can make it before the schools get out, even better. Plus if you include a weekday or two, great riding with no traffic! Bigsmile

We're waiting for Mr. Sunshine's input.  Twofinger

Seeing as the region is so large we should have an early Rally, in May or June, down south and a fall Meet up north in, say, September. That way we can down to some serious polling.

I don't know that I'd go that far, but I do know how to read a map. My partner in crime is a good route planner. I usually just follow her around. Judging from the polling it looks like we will be somewhere in the northern Sierras in June. There have been a few good suggestions for base camp locations already. Time to start doing some research.

Hi Guys,

Been a few years since I joined in the fun.  I did the Fortuna meets and they were always fun but I know that can get boring goung to the same place evey year. Not sure if Gil and Becky are still involved but they were great hosts.

Quincy is only 1.5 hrs from my house and there are a lot of really nice rides near Quincy for some loops etc.  Either location is good in my opinion. Bigok

If Quincy you have Laporte Road, Bucks Lake Road, Hwy 49 through Downieville, up around Lake Almanor to name a few rides.

I will try and make it this year. Thumbsup

I'm not going to Ashland. You kids have fun though....

 That's the plan.

All that's left is to decide on a base of operations in Ashland. There is the Caldera Brewery right next to the Best Western Windsor Inn. Looks like a possibility.

I was waiting until the 28th before assuming you all were coming here.  The Caldera Brewery is good, just had dinner there last night, $10 hamburgers, $12 single serving pizza's, chi chi, with over 100 beers and a full bar to choose from.  There is a Holiday Inn Express closer than the Best Western, might be a better price, I will go by each one, figure out the best deal and let you know.  There is also a little independant place close by, I think they go for $45 a night.  I was thinking we could have a bbq at my house Friday night for those that want to, I can pick you up from your motel and deliver you back if you want to have a few more than is safe to ride with.
Saturday I was planning on putting together some map books with varying length ride directions.  I can do everything from 75 mile loops for those that want some time in town to 350 mile loops for those that want to ride all day.  Any ADV folks who want some nice graded dirt chime in now and I'll set up a loop like that as well.  Since each loop follows different roads I am likely to recruit from local riders and get some guides if ya'll want them...and some of these loops follow killer back roads that don't really show how cool they are on maps....
Saturday Night can be dinner at Caldera, Sunday Breakfast at Morning Glory (best breakfast food in town)  or  Breadboard (2nd best breakfast in town) and Bon Voyage.
Please let me know if this is too much planning, I just want you all to enjoy yourselves.
PS, I would include a stop by Hansen's BMW, Triumph , Ducati, best shop ever!  These guys rock!

Jim,

Sorry to hear about the health issues. I hope you heal up quickly.

Me, I am still judging my ability to attend day to day. My back and ankle have still not recovered from an MVA in July 2012. Have discussed recently with my physician, and he thinks it may be wise to hold off on really long rides. The urge to get out there is just killing me.

Jim, sorry to hear about the DVT issues.  I'm bummed you're not riding but am also happy to hear you're not riding, in the sense that it sounds very dangerous to do so.

I'd really like to make this rally but am not sure yet how realistic it will be.  The wee-est one will be 5 months old so hopefully I can take 4 days off for the trip, but I'm not sure how comfortable he or I will be with that yet.  I've marked it in the calendar though!

Jim, sorry to hear about the DVT issues.  I'm bummed you're not riding but am also happy to hear you're not riding, in the sense that it sounds very dangerous to do so.

Given that this is my left leg, and that I already left part of right leg in Cupertino a few years ago   , I am truly a gimpy mess just now Poof. But I am up and around and just bought this with the support of my Dr ... which, if I crash, should be considerably less dangerous.

But a fella has to ride something! The pedaling is good therapy for the leg too !  Just have to keep the speed down and wear good gear.  Thumbsup

That is a sweet looking rig! My slow recuperation may just motivate me to rebuild my Litespeed Obed and get back out in the bicycle again.  Hope you recover quickly!

Nice bike! I can appreciate it more now that I've started cycling to work more often.

I've been following your posts and hope that you can make a full and fast recovery. Good idea to switch to some skinnier tyres while you recover, too. Many benefits, both physical and mental!  Bigok
