This is always the easiest STN National in the rotation for me to attend but I won't make it this year unless my plans change.

I am actually planning a bigger bike trip that will take me all the way to the left coast and back and the dates are in conflict.

IN!!! The number of multi-day trips I've done has tailed off the last couple years. I need to do a proper week-long moto trip and this is the perfect reason to go. Plus work won't be killing me.

THANKS FOR SETTING THIS UP FRANK!!!

What is the date of Clay's annual BBQ?

I want to make it to both, but I might only be able to make it to one. If his BBQ gets any bigger, we might want to consider holding the next National near him.  Lol

I'd like to go, but it's too far removed (date wise) from the FZ1 rally I must attend this year to make up for last years debacle.

If I get the new bike in time, here's the plan.

...

New bike or not, you better have new rubber on.   It's 2k miles not counting the twisty bits, and that'll double your miles.

I'm trying to figure out how to burn the last 1000 miles off my tires without eating too much off the new skins before June.

That is, assuming I don't buy a new bike this Spring - FJR or Ninja with hard bags?

Hmmm.  I have a cousin in Holland MI that I haven't seen for awhile...No way, I hear you need heated gear up there in June.

Why not just ride it and get new rubber the week before?  Just be careful when you're down to the cords.  Wink

looks like a pretty good trip.

If you decide to do this route/trip, let me know.  I've got a place in franklin, Tn (15 miles south of Nashville) you can stay at. I was planning on heading over to the national on either Sunday or Monday.  If I go sunday, I plan on staying at the Deal's Gap that evening, then taking a longer route to M. Valley on Monday.  If I go on Monday I plan to head over all the way...aprox 300 miles via Cherahola Skyway and Deal's Gap from here to M. Valley....all back roads.

I guess this means he's going to hitch hike...

If we aren't in geographic transition, I'm a likely suspect for this gather... kid on pillion. There is a killer BBQ joint there that we hit back in Oct... don't remember the name, it was a shack attached to and old service station/store on the outskirts of town, rolled in about 1 PM and got the last 4 plates of food. Gotta love places that sell out of food...

Rod....you guys need to come on over to Franklin sometime.  There is some outstanding roads west of town between here and the Tn. river area.  Very easy to set up some 200 mile loops of fun roads.  Lots of great places to eat here as well.  You gonna be at TriStar or Mail Pouch this year?  I think I'll do the STN national instead of STAR.  Your welcome to come up to Ky anytime you want...got a spare room there as well.  Be great to see ou guys again.

I've been looking at roads in KY, primarily SE.  It is just too far for day trips from home so it will have to be motel camping LOL.  I will definitely keep your invite in mind.  Mail Pouch is a 99%'er but it has gotten to the point I can ride the TriStar roads blind.

Hey Gary,
I'm going to be there for sure, just don't know what the logistics will be.  Maggie Valley is only two hours from home.  Like I said before there are some super roads east of there into TN and NC.

Looks like we will have some fun this summer.   It is about 60 out today with clear blue sky.  Hadn't ridden for a couple months, weather has really sucked.  Amazing how riding just about an hour in those conditions can change your whole outlook on life.
Take care,
Rod

Looking forward to seeing you again Rod.  You sort of dropped off for awhile.  Any route suggestions for eastern TN would be sincerely appreciated.

Well, I may not be good to go after all... just found out that I'm probably starting a new job in the next few weeks, taking a week off in March to go to NorCal for my nieces wedding, stepping off that red eye home and starting my week of Total Control Instructor certification. That two weeks off is going to dig into my flexibility until work quiets down in the fall, me thinks. As it is, I may have to postpone my TC cert... which would suck, it would be awesome to do it locally.

Bummer.

Ya, kinda... but at least it's a cool job, working with cool folks, and allows me to play with cool bikes... and living in an area where a lot of folks are commuting 1+ hours one way, I'm closes enough to spend most of my hour at home for lunch if I choose/need to. If I have to postpone my TC cert, it'll give me an excuse to go to SoCal for a week when it's cold here, and put some miles on one of Lee's bikes. Could be worse, man.

Hi Frank,
Tried to quit and sell the bike several times but that selling thing looks good until you realize that means you can't ride it anymore  Lol

Yes I have lots of routes and will throw some together over the next couple of weeks.  Just have to modify them to come out of Maggie Valley.  For me, Maggie Valley is in the middle of great riding but I normally go east or west of there, not through it.  I normally have to burn an hour to get into serious twisties, but Maggie Valley is dead center.  It will make for a long day but you can even hit N. GA.

Frank,
These are some of my old routes and I will need to link them back to Maggie Valley.  They are by no means anywhere near all the excellent routes N and NE of Asheville.  Actually they are on the western edge of areas that we ran out of Sparta.  There is some overlap in some of these maps and by National time I'll have better stuff.  I definitely want to add N GA.  That is some of the best riding around.

Thanks Rod.  Wish I had more time to ride in that area.  From here it looks like all good road.

Those maps just scratch the surface.  Since I have lived in the area for about nine years I have had the time to run most of the best roads, but definitely not all.  For about the first four or five years I ran a swath from N. SC to the Cherohala/Deals Gap area and most of the roads around Sparta.  Then I discovered the ones on those maps.  I keep mentioning N.Ga because there are a bunch of fantastic roads there.  There definitely won't be enough time to ride them all, but my goal is to put together maybe four routes to give people a choice other than just going to Deals Gap.

There are three really nice roads that run the eastern face of the Blue Ridge in that area.  226a and 80.  Then there is 181 out of Morganton, a bit further North and a different breed of cat.  The surface has always been great and it adds passing lanes, mostly on the way up.  It is what I call a rhythm road because you can set up a series of turns snapping back and forth.  Problem with it is that you can run some pretty high speeds and run right into a series of medium tight twisties.  For me it is just great fun.  A really fun afternoon for me is to run up and down 181, take Fish Hatchery Rd to the bottom of 226a, do it up and back, then slide down to the bottom of NC80 and run it up and back.  Lots of variations on that, but ya better stock up on Dramamine.  LOL  Way too many roads and way too little time.

The above link is to a real rudimentary site.  It is made off of a GIS project I use to make printed maps of where I am traveling.  What it has are a whole bunch of great cycle roads but you may have to work a bit to figure out how to display them.  What it does have missing is N.Ga.  Not sure if I'll have the time to make it into a better product.

Jamie and I are IN for Nationals!  Banana Chili Just made reservations for Mon/Tue/Wed nights. Not sure when we're leaving yet but will post up closer to the event. I'm stoked to ride the whole BRP again on the way down (been several years), as well as ride Western NC/TN again. Woohoo!

Wow, sounds like a great plan.  I've been planning on hitting E. Ky for a couple years now, but have never made it.  KYREX and a friend from Marietta, OH both say it's great.  Watch out for Rayland Givens and Boyd Crowder if you know who they are.  Lol

Spring meet is good. I get another week of vacation next year, so that should make it easier to schedule longer moto trips in 2015. This year it's all about leveraging my 3 day weekends.

Was looking forward to the meet, but have hung up the spurs.  Sold GS on Saturday and now cage only.  Will miss riding with a who bunch of you guys.

What!?  Is everything OK?  I am sad to hear.

I have thought about caging it to the dinner.  Not that far away.

Doug,
I'm OK but getting old sucks, don't do it if you can  Lol  Lots of nagging stuff on longer rides and hydration has become super critical.  Of course all that drinking means stopping all the time.  There will never be as much fun as pushing a bike up 16 or Shady Valley, but you just have to pay a higher price when you're a geezer.

Thanks for the concern.

Spring meet?   When and where?  I didn't see it in reg. 6. Could we get a sticky?

I was also wondering about the spring ride.  Had a great time last year.  Can we come?

I know we will - just finished loading my routes onto my GPS - picked up a full set of new paper maps over the weekend.

All I really need to find yet is a POI listing of best roadside BBQ joints.   That would really be nice.

krambonz in Tellico Plains is great.  scooters in dillard, ga is very good.  12 Bones in Asheville, two locations is super good.
krambonz has large quantities of meat.  service isn't all that friendly but ya ain't there to date the waitress.  12 bones has a great selection of meats and sides, all of which are excellent, plus home grown beer.

Better get there before NOON.  Demand varies, but it's not uncommon for him to be sold out before 1 pm.

Can't vouch for the extras, but his meat is damn good.

Err....that didn't come out right, did it?

It's kind of funny, all the good places you need to check if and when they are open plus whether they run out of the good stuff.

First time I wanted his brisket.  He was out and I had to settle for pork.  Second time I went earlier.

I can't fault him.  He can't be certain of how much business he will get and doesn't want to be stuck with leftovers that won't sell, and there's also a limit on how much he can make at a time.  It's not an exact science, and not having an established location with on-site food storage, etc. compounds the issue.

I don't blame the small places, it's more like a catch 22.  The good places have limitations and if they become too popular the quality or service falls off.  12 bones is my favorite.  They are open 11-4 Tues thru Sat.  They do have two locations and one is open on Mon.  They make some great specials, usually on Sat but they are gone quick.  So when I want their stuff, I plan on being there at 11 on Sat.  Just sayin'
