365K mi. FJR Rider - Ohio + Pics
«
on:
July 10, 2014, 09:31:26 am »
My buddy and I were out in Southeast Ohio a few weeks back riding north of Marietta on 26 and so on. We stopped for a stretch and this scruffy old guy rolls up on an FJR and starts talking to us. At first he leaves the bike on, and he's yelling at us through the helmet and we can't hear anything.. We signal that we cant hear and he shuts the bike off..
Then he tells us to check out his odometer reading... At first glance I thought it said 36,5k... no biggie..
....then I looked again and realized that it was
365k!
...
He announced that he got the bike in 03 new when he retired and had put ALL the miles on the bike in Ohio only...
Then he said he was going for his best month riding record ever.. 9k miles...
9k miles in 1 month
! and that he had done
8k in the previous month
..
He said he had put over 100 individual tires on the bike, had replaced a few brake rotors and several sets of pads, had replaced the suspension once, and had one or 2 valve clearance checks (no adjustment needed IIRC). He had all the receipts. He also showed us a clutch lever where he wore the brass bushing all the way through! He said he was going to call Yamaha and complain about that..
Said he never had any problems with the shaft drive.. The mill sounded pretty noisy (sounded like worn / loose cam chain tensioners).... but who gives a sh*t at that mileage?
He said he'd had a couple crashes - run ins with deer, dogs, etc etc.
I know I'm leaving some details out... but damn.. this guy is an animal and I thought it deserved to be mentioned in case nobody else has seen him around or documented such ridiculousness..
Anyway..

Ohio is 220 miles by 220 miles. Wow, he must be bored with no place to go.

Hopefully you didn't get downwind of him....he....had an
odor
atmosphere about him. My riding buddies & I were taking a break at a rest area on Ohio Rt7 just southwest of the 800 terminus a few yrs. ago, when that guy damn near did a stoppie after noticing us & pulled into the rest stop to tell us about his mileage accomplishments. At that time he had close to 240k on it....but.....we cut the conversation short, making some b.s. excuse just to get away from the stench.... I think his 'stitch would've been able to stand up w/out him wearing it!
He also informed us that the mileage was all Buckeye mileage. His riding criteria was to ride a minimum of 100 miles per day, w/in the boundaries of I-70 to the north, the Ohio River to the east & south & US35/US23 to the west...or something like that IIRC.

Sure the mileage is impressive, but his need to stop and tell people about it out of the blue is borderline psychotic.

WOW... being the proud new owner of an '08 FJR with 10K miles... I'm VERY encouraged to see this kind of longevity out of these bikes.

I've been thinking about these posts for a couple of months. On the face of it the guy has my respect. Then I think about the miles were put on in Ohio and some chatter about a DUI and him having to stay in state. Proof?
Deeper thought has me thinking this guy needs help. Maybe that's all he does is ride around at 100 miles a day? At least is isn't out there doing something much worse.

You should know better than to troll these bike forums. Everybody knows that all the roads in SE Ohio are flat, straight and boring. I cant for the life of me figure out why I keep going back.

being from SE ohio i have met this man few times , yes he WILLLL talk your ear off and yes he has lil funk to his odor. On other hand he mentioned being a widow and a Vietnam Vet. Dont have clue if either of these are true but i will give him the respect he deserves until i know otherwise. On the other hand you do have to find an excuse to get away from him cause he will keep talking

Any news on this dude's new ride? I think he's cool as shit. Who cares if he wants to bend your ear and smells like the monkey house at the zoo. He put his life-sucking time in, now he's retired an having a ball. Right on.

I agree. If he is a widow maybe stopping and talking to people are really the only interactions this guy has. So he's retired and likes to ride his motorcycle a lot. Then he stops and talk to people about it. Yeah maybe showing his mileage off to everyone is a bit overboard but he's proud of it, there's a LOT worse things he could be doing. It may be an inconvenience to some, but personally he sounds like an awesome dude to me.
