I hear Fortuna's nice.  Bigsmile

Actually, there's camping and hotels within walking distance of a brewery.

You have a short memory.  2010 was pretty juicy.  I remember Opus hating us pretty good coming into Crescent City after a constant soaking all the way from Bandon OR and snow at the Oregon / California line on 199.  I don't have any pictures because my camera isn't waterproof.

Here's a couple from another washout.  Rain from Seattle to Fortuna and all the way home.

Look, it's only raining in Fortuna.

Pffft. 2010 was YEARS ago.

I mean, of course it will rain because we'll be PNWers on vacation, but can't we really expect that no matter where we go?

Hell, it snows on 36 between Red Bluff and Fortuna. At least in 2010 it did.

If we want to do Fortuna this year, we'll have to choose another weekend. Two events - one cycling and another group - have booked all the lodging I was researching in Fortuna.

Quincy's really nice. Only downside is that the CHP tends to run a LOT of speed traps on CA-70 around that area in the summertime.

But the road options up there are almost endless, and Lassen is within easy reach. And 89 through the Lassen area is something else.  Inlove Inlove Inlove

Unfortunately, due to other people booking their events, the where and when are inextricably linked.

I'm supporting the weekend before Memorial Day as the when and Quincy as the where.

Enforcement on CA-70 cant be any worse than enforcement on CA-36 and US-101.

For the first time since I've been here (2008), the date in 2015 isn't an issue for me, but having been in that boat for the past 7 years, I definitely empathize.  Sad

As for enforcement on 70 vs. 36 and 101, it could be because I find myself in that area more often. Just seems like I see it every single time I'm in the area, without fail. It's not something pokey ol' me has to worry about, but I know most people ride a little MUCH faster than I do. Bigsmile

I couldn't see any camping options in Quincy, but the motel looks good. What're the beer options?

I'm all for sticking with the regular weekend. If we continue to have two per year, it's reasonable that people will be able to make at least one.

Buck's Lake is in the general area, about 19 miles out. Plenty of camping there, and a fun road to get to Quincy proper, but probably about a 30 minute ride.

I don't drink much at all, so I had to look up pubs/taverns. I found two, but hopefully someone more familiar with such things will have a better idea...

Before we get too far along in choosing a venue we ought to see what the Sierra winter brings. If it's a heavy snow year (certainly overdue) the two best roads near Quincy (Oroville-Quincy and Quincy-La Porte) may not be rideable in late May.

Tyler did a nice report that included Quincy and area.

But yeah, it is a long way till May/June so lots of time to throw other locales on the fire. Like John Day, Fort Bragg, Castlegar  Lol

Knobnose is correct. A heavy winter might dictate a late June/early July for some of the best roads to be opened and even then they'd be filthy with debris. Then there's the seasonal heat to consider; up in the mountains it's not a problem but the valley furnace is starting its unstoppable climb to 11.

Ft Bragg is cool but I don't think there are any campsites that would meet the arduous demands of those insisting on roughing it.  Wink

There are only three roads in the area.  101, 128 and 20.  All of them are good, but it makes to loops from town a bit limited.

But the beer is good.

Fort Bragg to Ukiah via 253 and then back to the coast via Orr Springs Rd is pretty sweet. 20 is a fun road too. And, I could ride Bragg to Leggett all day.  Inlove

There is a campground in town whose name escapes me Cleo or some such. The state park north of town is beautiful, stayed there two years ago.

Edit. Found it

http://www.cleonecampground.com   Right in town or maybe not. .???  My memory may be failing

You all don't have a clue as to the amount of great roads in that area. Bubba Z gave you a few, but trust me their is a bunch more in that area. one of the roads I'm thinking about just got a brand new surface.

That's one reason I've never been down that way. It's toothpick-in-your-eyelids straight and boring from here almost all the way there unless you're Spectre who leaves in mid February just for the thrill of riding on icy roads. Hail

Is it against the law to have a WCRM in Region 3?

A great area to ride.

Not against the "law", but it would make the "C" obsolete.

Utah = sounds good.  Change.  Nice location.

Have visited in Utah spring, opinion of good time is mid-April to mid May to get good weather and avoid crowds.
most prime weather estimate here would be mid-May.

I've made to Sept WCRM's 0.5 but not yet to the spring meet.
However, 2015 spring is especially congested for me (am only a 'maybe'), so schedule it fully at others' discretion.

1100 miles of freeway to Panguitch ain't gonna happen.  If I'm going to ride 1100 miles one way, I'd rather have it in Ventura CA.  Ride the canyons above Malibu, head up above Ojai etc.  I'll see you all in Quincy.

Let's be careful here. Last May five of us had a ride planned and were meeting in Duck Creek. Not far at all from Panguitch. Remember we got that snow storm in Utah and Colorado? They cleared the roads but the country was covered in white and morning was in the 20s. A bit later in May or early June sounds better to me.

Very valid concerns. Thumbsup  Panguitch is at about 6600 ft elevation and the night time temperatures are usually in the low 30s though May and early June.  Cedar Breaks is at 11,000 ft and is often closed until mid-June.  Anyone wanting to start riding early in the morning is going to need some warm riding gear.

The FJR Forum has moved its annual SW-FOG event from Kanab to Cedar City due to a motel closing.  Their event runs from May 28-31.

I'd really like to ride that road from Fortuna to Fort Bragg again, I just don't want to do it in a monsoon like last time.

The beer is always good though and that's what really matters.  Thumbsup

Going to suggest Weaverville again. When I look at the maps, it is just so central. Yes, we got cooked last time but the riding options in the area are extremely hard to beat.

Actually that is a good idea. Just say where you are going and see how few people show up. At the end of the riding season, the lowest attendee ride wins.  Lol EEK! Crazy

Either one is a winner. Outstanding day rides from either location. What's not to like?

Mid August.  That way it might be as hot as Weaverville was.

Out here in the west it's perfectly possible to do both on a given day's ride.

I think this one is being decided by executive fiat.

I think this one is being decided by executive fiat.

It has been long clear, that what the WCRM needs is to follow LOOWB rules of order, a Grand Poobah  - to do what's right - and hats ...yes, hats.

" And thus, annually a Grand Poobah of the WCRM shall be selected and unto that custody shall go the judgement of where, and yes, when the revered WCRM shall take form."  - LOOWB/wcrm chapter 6, verse 9

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Bubba. But with the new job, grad school, and helping to plan a major event for my bicycle club, I'm tapped out.  Embarassment
