Looking at the "STN memories" thread, I was reminded that some meets have had pre-planned, pre-paid, catered meals in the past. Those seem to have gone away for whatever reason. Is it lack of interest in planning?

Should we have a pre-planned, pre-paid meal at WCRM 2015?

Poll runs for 60 days.

The problem is attendance. There simply hasn't been any.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Ok, post-snark edit. In my experience with recent event planning for a bicycling nonprofit I work with, we've found a correlation between advance ticket sales and attendance. (Well, duh, you say?) Maybe buying a ticket in advance will help to increase the anticipation and as a result, attendance? Or maybe WCRM is done, forever.

Sometimes, when an event has been done for a long time, it helps to ask the seemingly obvious questions to find out how to get things going again.

Let's find a spot, set-up a hotel, arrange for a dinner(paid in advance) and have a deadline for STNers to "poop or get off the pot".  There will be some that cannot commit until after the deadline due to family, life or job. Fine, good, OK. But if we can't get X number of riders that have prepaid and committed, well then, just a weekend deal for a couple of us. And we tell the hotel/dinner people it's off.

Let's keep the conversation going instead of jumping to solutions. Even if people just want to complain. Complaining is cathartic. Wink

A pre-paid dinner might be a hook to get people to commit. The brewpub in Fortuna might go for it and they have a decent kitchen and excellent beer. Certainly easer for them than chasing down individual tabs. Worth looking into.

That's what I'm thinking - I'm willing to give them a call if there's enough interest.

The campground and a couple of hotels in Fortuna are booked solid for the weekend before memorial day due to a bicycling club meet.  Angry3

We'll have to choose another weekend or another location.

If we want to stay in Fortuna the week after Memorial day, May 29-30 is available. If we want a group rate at the campground, we can get 15% off if we have one point of contact, a contract, and one person paying for at least six sites. That includes free use of an outdoor camp kitchen (no refrigeration but they have a grill).

Now we're cooking on the front burner!! Some good ideas. If there is a shower available I don't mind camping.

It is a long ways off for folks at this point, so be careful not to peak too early. It is a long race !

Usually when an exciting or interesting event is announced, those interested or marginally interested, jump on the band wagon. At the end, when life or schedules have changed,  the likely attendees thin out. Always better to have a lot of potential folks posting.  My $.02.

I like what you're doing Stef.  Looking at structural elements.
WCRM is 7 or so months out.   Huge time.

Also, keep eye open for additional ideas out of left field.

Well, this is more to the right, at least of Fortuna. But I always thought Quincy would make a great spot for the WCRM.  Went through there a few years back and quite liked the area. Lassen is in reach and so is a nice ride on 70.  Couple of cute motels there too and  ....  couch  ... less rain.  Lol

I think Quincy would be great or Downieville too, though it might be a little too close for the bay area folks.

When i think of WCRMs, we need (in no particular order)

Roads - great roads surrounding the location
Convenient location - 2 day ride from anywhere in the west region - this kind of limits us to northern cal
Lodging options - camping and motels of all star levels (glamping anyone?)
Food and beverage - multiple options within walking distance of lodging
Timing - weekend before Memorial day seems to work best - weather, crowds, attendee conflicts. etc.

Quincy is certainly worth a look. A loop composed of Quincy-Laporte Rd. and Oroville-Quincy Hwy. makes a very nice ride if they are clean.

Good ideas here. Quincy looks nice(if that's what we want, I'm in). But, closer to the coast maybe?!
