I have an '02 rc51. Its rough since it was stolen just before I bought it (the theft is why the owner was willing to sell it).

I love it, even though I know its only about 75% of where it will be when I'm done.

Its different from the VFR.
Its going to be mostly a track bike with just a little weekend riding thrown in.

I have plans and fixes for some of the niggling things.

The shock link from DKR or moriwaki, get it. Even the stock shock is descent with that installed.
reverse the radiator fans and add heat shields, more on this when I post my how to write-up.
And Start a weightloss program, like BLS did but for the RC.

I'd keep the VFR though, its much more comfortable on long rides (like 300+ miles days.)..
