The time has come to plan another group riding weekend.    Bigok

Dates:

Friday, August 22 - Sunday, August 24

Location:

Rangeley Lake, Maine (approximately 4 hours from Boston).  Rangeley is in western Maine, near the borders of New Hampshire and Quebec.  It's primarily a wilderness area with miles and miles of empty roads perfect for sport-touring.

Lodging:

Like last year we are staying at the Town & Lake Motel & Cottages.  T&L is right on Rangeley Lake and has very comfortable and affordable accomodations.  The owners are very friendly and there are chairs and fire pits right on the shore of the Lake for relaxing at night.  We can walk into town for dinner/drinks.

The T&L has both motel rooms and cottages.  Last year some of our group stayed in the cottages and some in the motel.  The cottages sleep 4 and cost $225 a night.  The motel rooms are $99 double occupancy.  Unfortunately the cabins are booked up for Friday night, but they do have 6 motel rooms left.  So the plan is to stay in the motel on Friday and move to the cottage on Saturday (or just stay in the motel, if you prefer).  There are 4 more cabins left for Saturday night.  Book Early (207-864-3755) if you are interested in going.  I'm on a list for a cabin on Friday night if there is a cancellation.

Your cost for lodging will be approximately $50-57 a night (double or quad occupancy).  I will assist with room-mates, if needed.

Riding/Route:

The area around Rangeley is primarily wilderness with few tourists or traffic lights.  It's not uncommon for there to be 20-30 miles between towns with wide-open roads in between.  There are more moose than people and we end up seeing at least one moose each trip.  If you have a passport, bring it as some of us may want to cross over to Quebec to do some riding.  Not mandatory.

Anyone is welcome to join us.  Please make sure your bike is in good condition (tires, chain, etc.) for this type of trip.  This is a rain or shine ride and it always rains (at least a little) on my rides, so be prepared.

Here are some pictures of the last 2 year's rides if you are on the fence:

Chris, you PM'ed me a great question I should share:  about the pace of the ride.

There is a wide variety of skills/pace preferences on our group rides.  To accomodate everyone we organize the group so that each person knows where the next break is and people are responsible for the rider behind them.  We also usually have a person run sweep that knows the route or has a radio or cell phone.

If I'm leading a group I will slow down on the straights and stop at each turn to make sure we've still got everybody. This allows the guys who want to ride fast and the one's who want to take it easier to both ride the same roads, at their own pace, and have just as much fun.

I don't think we've ever lost anyone on any of these rides.  Cluster F's take up too much time and can ruin your day.

Whats the riding schedule like Keith?  I would have to ride up Saturday and head home Sunday.  I guess I wouldn't be doing much local riding.

The normal riding schedule is to spend most of Friday riding up to Rangeley.  Usually we try to meet somewhere central to most people, like on Interstate 495 and go up as a group (have lunch).  We normally do some two lane roads most of the way rather than straight interstate.  Check in is at 3pm.  We normally get in between 3-5pm, check-in, unpack, maybe go for a short ride and then go to bar/dinner for the evening.  Saturday is up and out by 8:30, breakfast, ride until about 3-4pm and unwind and have dinner.  Sunday morning we usually just leave and try to group up with people heading the same direction.  Some leave early, others sleep in.

It's almost 7 hours from Bridgeport to Rangeley.  The only reasonable way to do this trip would be to ride up Friday, otherwise you are only hanging out at the Town & Lake with us on Saturday afternoon/evening and leaving the next morning.

Pat, too bad; you've got to join us one of these days; I know you would love it.

Mark, you are more than welcome to join us.  No matter what your riding style you would fit in as we have all types of riders in this group.  So far there are about 5 of us.  I'm trying to work out the room-mate situation, so if you are interested PM me and let me know.  I should be able to find you a room-mate.

Will attempt to make this, but...   We have a mandatory offsite on the Friday at work, that adds about 2.5 hours (and a late start) to my travel time.

Not sure I want to spend a few hours at night riding in moose country....

I'm waiting to hear from Doug about whether a friend of his is going to join us or not.  I should know that this week and I can sort out the room-mate situation from there.  I may need a roomie myself.

It might not be a bad idea for someone to book a room for at least Friday, just to have it.  There is a two week window to cancel that reservation, though I believe there might be a processing fee (I need to check and will edit this post tonight).

Tony, why not meet us Saturday morning and ride with us for the day?

Uh, yes, but not many.  I just got off the phone with the motel. There are only 2 rooms left!  I would suggest if you are going on this trip that you call and make your reservation ASAP (207-864-3755).  Even if you are a single we can find you a room-mate.  When I called a week ago they had 6 rooms left.  This is Maine in the summer after all.

Still, two more rooms is not going to cut it.  It looks like we will need a backup motel for Friday.  We stayed at the Saddleback Inn a couple years ago and that was decent.  Rates are $125 a night for 2 queens and they have room.

Town & Lake is all booked up for Friday & Saturday.  No more rooms or cottages.   Sad

This is a problem as I was under the impression Saturday was not going to be an issue.  Let me know if you don't have a room for Saturday, we're going to have do some scrambling.

Lodging News, Part 3.1

I talked to Town & Lake this afternoon.  At first they told me they were full for the weekend.  I explained our situation and Joey checked and found more space for us.  There were two rooms (both King-sized singles) open for Friday.  I reserved both of them.  There was a cottage available for Saturday night.  I reserved that one too.  So these are the arrangements:

Friday
Scott: own room
Dean & Andy: room
Andrei & Doug: room
Bill & Marc: room
Joe & Keith: room
Charlie: own room
Mark: (working on it)

Saturday:
Cottage 1:  Scott, Dean, Andy & Keith
Cottage 2:  Doug, Charlie, Andrei, Mark
Bill & Marc: room
Joe: room

If anyone else is interested in joining us the best option at this point would probably be to book a room at the Saddleback Inn (207) 864-3434 for Friday night only.

Lodging News, Part 3

I talked to Town & Lake this afternoon.  At first they told me they were full for the weekend.  I explained our situation and Joey checked and found more space for us.  There were two rooms (both King-sized singles) open for Friday.  I reserved both of them.  There was a cottage available for Saturday night.  I reserved that one too.  So these are the arrangements:

Friday
Scott: own room
Dean & Andy: room
Keith & Doug: room
Bill & Marc: room
Joe: own room
Charlie: own room
Mark: ?
Andrei: ?

Saturday:
Cottage 1:  Scott, Dean, Andy & Keith
Cottage 2:  Doug, Charlie, Andrei, Mark
Bill & Marc: room
Joe: room

This still leaves an issue on Friday for two people.  Mark & Andrei, PM me and we'll try to work something out.  The best option at this point would probably be to book a room at the Saddleback Inn (207) 864-3434 for Friday night only.

Looks like I don't have a room for Friday...do any of you guys splitting rooms mind if I crash on your floor?  I'll still pay an equal part of the rental charge, so no worries there.  If not, I can always bring a tarp and sleep in the parking lot...wouldn't be the first time.

DAMN IT!!! DAMN IT!!! DAMN IT!!! DAMN IT!!! DAMN IT!!! DAMN IT!!!

The wife has booked a white water rafting trip that weekend down by you Keith, Deerfield River.  It is my birthday present, but it is something she has always wanted to do.

I love the Rangely area, beautiful country and GREAT roads.

Oh well, you guys enjoy.  I look forward to the reports and will see you next time.

just a few weeks to go...

If you would like to go into Quebec, plan ahead for the crossing.  You need a couple of things for the border:

Either a:

1) passport
or
2) birth certificate
and
a photo ID

(the passport requirement has not gone into effect yet)

You should also have a card from your insurance company stating that you have valid insurance for Canada (your agent will give you a card at no cost).  If something happens to your bike and you don't have verification of insurance they could hold your bike.

It's also reported that you can be turned away from the border due to past criminal convictions, no matter how long ago or how minor.  This is especially true for DUI's.  Also, leave your child pornography and firearms at home!

The trip into Canada is just optional for those who want to do it.

I'm also compiling a cell phone list.  I have most people's numbers, but still need Dean's, Mark's and Bill's.

Just came back from a 4 day trip- Stayed at a Friends Place on Dodge Pond-
Great riding- and Moose spoting...

YOU MUST RIDE the lower portion of RT. 142- NEWLY PAVED!!!
NO CARS, COPS.

RT 16 ON THE NORTH SIDE OF RANGLEY IS A BUMPY MESS...

otherwise you will all have a fantastic time-

I have a couple of possible routes for Saturday:

Route 1:  293 miles, running through Quebec and back into Maine (route in yellow)

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh271/hulkedup/Maine%202008/QuebecRoute.jpg

Route 2:  285 miles, running through Jackman and Moosehead Lake (if we don't go into Canada)

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh271/hulkedup/Maine%202008/JackmanRoute.jpg

Also, here's my suggestion for getting up to Rangeley on Friday:

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh271/hulkedup/Maine%202008/routetoRangeley.jpg

265 miles from S. Deerfield, 91 North to St. Johnsbury, Route 2 east, to 3 to 110 to 16 to Errol, NH, then 16 to Rangeley.

Seems like most people live west of 91.  Other routes would add quite a bit of mileage, but I'm open to other ideas.

Sorry dude not on the trip up.  You know how much I love that road.  Bigsmile  Let me re-work the route and include a pass over the Kanc' and White Mountains.  It will add some mileage, but it can be an option.

Yeah, it's a long way up there, ain't it?  That's what you've got to do in New England to avoid the tourists, traffic lights, strip malls, cops, etc.   Lol

Cops?  Don't you remember my little adventure a few years back where i proved that a ZX12R could run faster than an unmarked F150 for 10 miles without even knowing it was following?
That cost me a lot of money and 2 days in court. And a lot of mileage on the vehicle geting there and back for the court dates.

I've been up a few times since, the section east of Rangeley is regularly patrolled, and I'm not sure I'd totally trust 142 to be cop-free either.  I've never seen one there, but I have seen cop cars in some rather strange places recently.

Here's an alternative route that includes the Kancamangus Highway, Hurricane Mountain Road and Lake Mooselookmeguntic.  It's 300 miles from my house, which is an additional 35 miles over the St. Johnsbury route.  Just let me know which one you all want to do.

Only one week to go...

A few things to check:

  • tires
  • chain
  • spare key (ever snap one off in a gas cap?)
  • rain gear
  • oil change
  • insurance card
  • passport
  • map

Long Range Forecast is looking pretty good.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Anyone need the GPS files?  email me

I'd also like to get emergency information for everyone, just in case.  I've attached a file that I've used for years.  Fill it out and bring it with you.  Or if you want to keep it simple, send me this info:

In case of Emergency:

Your name:

Contact's name:

Contact's main phone number:

Contact's alternate phone number:

Any other specifics that should be noted would be helpful (allergies, any hardware in your body, contact lenses, etc)

I'll get a cell phone list out to everyone soon.

Still need to talk to Scott about a meeting time in Deerfield for next Friday morning.

I have a dilemma. I have a medical issue that’s going to prevent me from attending this weekend’s ride. Those who know me realize how serious this is as I live for these rides. I know that rooming accommodations have been already set but I was wondering if someone can alter their plans/accommodations and fill in my spots on this trip. I’d hate to have fate add insult to injury by having to pay for rooms that I can’t get to. If you can help me out post here or contact Keith to help coordinate the shuffle. My only request is ….

Doug, sorry you can't make it; I know it has to be serious for you to miss one of these as you've been there for just about every one of them.  Heal up.

These were the most current arrangements I had:

Friday:
Scott, Dean & Andy & Keith: cabin (I was notified last week that a cabin was available)
Andrei & Doug: room
Bill & Marc: room
Joe:  room
Charlie: own room
Mark: own room

Saturday:
Cottage 1:  Scott, Dean, Andy & Keith
Cottage 2:  Doug, Charlie, Andrei, Mark
Bill & Marc: room
Joe: room

Maybe we could switch out someone in the rooms into one of Doug's spots...  Please let me know if you are interested.

Keith,

Here is the "getting around Conway/North Conway" route that I always use when traveling through the area.  As you get onto 302 there is a bridge that is being rebuilt but it is still MUCH better that the main road.

Thanks for that tip.  That really saves that much time, huh?  I looks like a long way around, but when you are stopped on Route 16 on a warm Friday it does look like a better way to go.

Mark,

Thanks for the offer.  The problem is I doubt you can cancel at this late date without losing part of a deposit.  A friend said that he may be able to go in Doug's place, but he won't know until tomorrow.  I'll keep you guys updated.

BTW, the weather for this weekend looks awesome; the best we've had in three years.  Maybe my rain curse is broken.   Bigsmile

If there is traffic it definately will be quicker.  Besides that Passaconway and West Side roads are funs little bits of pavement.

Scott, I'd still lead the group up to Keith's or to hook you guys up with Andy and Dean. Let me know.

Doug, Sorry you can't make it. Heal up fast my friend, you'll be missed.

Scott, Charlie is 5 minutes from the ferry, but is concerned about the pace from Bport to Hartford. Charlie is a conservative rider and would not be able to keep up with you at your usual RT 8 speed. Crazy. He will be glad to meet you what ever ferry you take. You guys could meet Dean and I at Gengras, have Joe meet us there as well and possibly Bill also. The time will key on which ferry you take. Figure an hour from Bport to Hartford.

Chris glad to see your back safe and sound. Sorry you can't make it also. Can't wait to hear about the Eastern Europe trip.

No, you've got Joe and Charlie to keep you company.

Dude, I need your arrival time in Bridgeport so we can coordinate everyone else's time around that.   :pokestick:

Aight.  I would like to take the 8AM out of PJ.  This would put me in Bridgeport at 9:15AM.  Is this cool?

Bridgeport to Gengras BMW/Triumph/Ducati in East Hartford, Conn (you were there last year for the demo day):

- I-95 north from Bridgeport to I-91 north in New Haven (exit 48)
- in Hartford, exit 32 (not sure if it's A or B) to I-84 east, take the first exit, which is Route 44, Connecticut Boulevard, East Hartford.
- Gengras is about a block down on the left:  540 Connecticut Boulevard, East Hartford CT 06108

Meet at Gengras at 10:15
Meet at my house in S. Deerfield about 11:30.

Been talking to a few people about the ride up on Friday.  I think it makes more sense for Charlie to meet you guys at Gengras.  Joe and Scott can just ride directly to my house.  I think that's the best way to accomodate everyone and keep us from getting too late of a start.  We definitely want to be off the road by dusk up there.

Let's plan for Andy, Bill, Dean & Charlie to meet at Gengras, can we say 10-10:15am and then everyone else meet at my house for 11:15-11:30.  We'll have to grab some lunch on the road unless you guys want me to pick up some lunch meat and we could have a quick meal before we all take off.

Also, we have a new person joining us:  Mark (HappyBusa), who is going to take Doug's spot.  Big thanks to Mark, who's done several of these trips with me before.

A couple of last minute things:  don't forget your passport/birth certificate, Canadian insurance card, bathing suit and cash for the meals/motel.

I'm planning on getting my ass out of work by 3:00 at the latest.  Get out of Fall River, split my way from Boston to Portsmouth, then hopefully smooth sailing from there.  I should be in by 9:00 at the latest.  Hoping to leave earlier, but won't know until about 5 minutes prior to departure.

Can you buy beer in gas stations in Maine, or do you have to go to a package store?  I'm thirsty already!

I would bring an extra layer if you are wearing mesh Scott just to be safe.. We are going to be pretty far north. I'm still waiting on my Canadian Ins. card. Getting psyched Chili
I'll give Charlie a call with the details. He called me the other night.

Just talked to Charlie, he is all set.

Bill, we are going to meet at Gengras for 9am and grab some breakfast at the TripleA Diner about a mile away. We should be on the road for 10am.

Mark, IIRC there are a couple of convenience-type stores (one across the street) that one could buy alcohol at.  There is also a full grocery just about a mile away.  I seem to remember that these places were open late, after dinner, probably past 9pm.  Should be a lot of fun on Friday and Saturday nights sitting by the lake with a fire going.

Scott, I'm going to bring my mesh jacket too.  You will need some kind of layer as it will probably get cold in the morning.

They may not ask for the birth certificate, but they just might.  Any way to get a copy from the hospital?  I probably couldn't find mine either (have a passport).

We last crossed in 06 and only needed our driver's licenses.  The border guard took them into the shack, ran all of them for warrants and came back out a few minutes later.

Despite numerous trips to Canada the last 10 years, I always had a passport so I never had this problem.  I'm pretty sure a drivers license is OK.

Beginning January 31, 2008, U.S. and Canadian citizens 19 years and older who enter the U.S. at land and sea ports of entry from within the Western Hemisphere will need to present government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license as proof of identity, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate, or a passport. Children age 18 and under will be able to enter with proof of citizenship. Verbal claims of citizenship and identity alone will not be sufficient to establish identity and citizenship for entry into the United States.

A strange phenomena happened to our gryro compass.  It was just like the Bermuda Triangle and suddenly East was West and then we were lost.  After a “ton” of miles behind us we made it to the dock.   I then was in my door at 6:15 pm.   I really had a great time, I enjoyed the company, the roads were outstanding and the weather was a dream come true.  Hope everyone made it home… did you ?

I figured you guys would be better off after you split off from us.  We did 118, which was really bad for frost heaves.  The roads in NH were cruel to us today.  We even saw a couple of motorcycle accidents, minor ones.  Seems like there were a lot of knuckleheads out today.  Pictures to follow.

Compadres,
I left Rangeley this morning 'round 7:30, took some pictures along
the way thru the great north woods, jumped on I-93, and stopped
in Hillsboro, NH for gaz.
The fjr never started after that. I waited for my truck & trailer from
noon til 2:30.  Got "shipoopie" into the trailer and brot her home.
Ignition switch was suspect, and after taking the top tripleclamp off,
took the switch apart and re-attached the red positive wire( solder joint).
Put her back together and voila! ( only I was still adding expletives)
*#&!* Twofinger
She runs.
I just got in the house.
I cant count the miles by trailer, but over 900 by FJR.
good roads, great roads, good friends, new friends.
I had a great  time.

If Hartford folks arrived at 5:10 then we did a bit better (being that it is more than 1 hr from Hartford to Bridgeport).  We arrived at the docks 5:10 pm on a rail.  Boat departure was 6:00 pm .   It started when we woke up somewhere around Franconia after a few #,$,% from Scott then decided to take 93 to 495 to 290 to 9 to 49 to 20 to 84 to 8  hike.

I don't think there's any such thing as a fun ride when you're heading south in New England on a Sunday.

Mine wasn't bad at all...got on the road at 11:00 and took 16 out of Rangeley, hauled ass thru northern NH and down thru the White Mountains.  Must have passed every damned Harley in New England...do they really enjoy going the speed limit (some weren't even going the speed limit)?  Stopped over in North Conway for a few beers and left there at 6:00 or so.  Traffic was hell the rest of the way, but made the best of it and had some fun with 'em anyways.

It was good meeting y'all.  As long as I'm free, I'll see you guys at the next event.

1143 miles. Bigsmile
I had a great ride home!  Really, I did!
We got to 302 (I think) and had a choice to go north or south.  Joe figured Why go north?  Seemed counterproductive at the time. Shrug  Of course, we forgot that the roads can't go in the exact direction they should because of THOSE GREAT BIG MOUNTAINS that stand between you and the interstate.  We stopped at a gas station at route 3 & 93.  Joe starts talking to the attendant and she says we need to go back an hour to pick up 91. EEK!  I'm thinking, no way, so out comes the map.  It turns out this country has an effective interstate system in place so we utilized it. Bigsmile
I knew Loudon was 45 minutes north of Nashua and had done that part of the trip numerous times back when I raced so we headed out at exactly 12 noon from the extreme northern tip of the White mountains.
We stopped once on 93 just shy of 495 and again 40 miles later to get gas.  This couple on a Wing with trailer told us 90 is backed up 10-12 miles west of Worcester.  Again, i'm like "No way" so out comes the map...
That's how we found route 9 and hwy 49. Shrug
With full gas tanks we headed out and made Bridgeport at 5:15pm with very little traffic.
Personally, I think 5.5 hours from the top of the White Mtns of NH to Bridgeport, CT. is pretty fucking fantastic. Cool
The funniest part was I thought Joe kinda knew where we were and where we were going.  Turns out neither of us had a clue. Lol

I had an awesome weekend.  Great roads and the weather was perfect.
I now have access to a  personal trainer from Soho who argues with the local deli about the NY times missing the arts and leisure section who unfortunately rides a bicycle, a doctor who would prefer to be an astronaut, a guy that sounds just like "Jim Cooke, owner of Sam Adams", a dude named "Sulley" (Which is always a good thing for a NY'er to have when coming within 100 miles of Boston), a Penn State grad that bores tunnels and consumes large amounts of "Spirits", A duck specialists who rides a fast bike slow unless it's 2 miles across the US border; then it's all bets are off, A happy Russian, A little dude from Mass that is impervious to ice cold water and an FJR riding construction worker who sadly, was born too short. Bigsmile
...And they can rest comfortably knowing they have acess to ....ME. Bigok
Thanks boys, great riding. Thumbsup
I won't ask who ended up with the beer in the fridge (Duh) Smile

Home safe and sound. 952 miles. Road of the weekend, RT.27 up to the border, hands down. Babe of the weekend, French Canadian Border Guard. Inlove.Quote of the weekend ,from Scott of course, " Dean, as a person, I like you, your a nice guy, but as a group , I hate you f@$*@%'s!" Refering to cyclists on the road who think they are all Lance Armstrongs and ride 2 and 3 abreast taking up way to much of "his" road. You had to be there. Pix to follow. Another great weekend. Thanks guys
