I am the white trash in my neighborhood. Old car with a spot behind the rear wheel rusted through, mis-matched bike parked in the landscaping beside the driveway, but the grass is getting cut tomorrow and the trash stays in the bin.

BF, I know you have plenty of years of professional experience with this, and I'm surprised that you would suggest talking it out. How many fights have you been called out to that started as a neighborly chat about cleaning up the neighborhood?
Very few, if any.

at least ya all don't have your neighbor as your on the other side of the wall neighbor. i live in a duplex and my neighbor stomps around the house and lets the doors slams and whatnot (they are mounted with spring return -i have the same setup, but you won't hear my doors slam). i have actually talked to him a few times, but i guess since we have a baby that cries occasionally, he has every right to make noise. (and yes, you can hear almost "everything" thru the walls. my wife has been woken up by his alarm clock if that gives you any idea) nice enough guy and gal. but dang people... it's 11 or so at night. some of us gotta get up in a few hours. our yards all look most the same since the base housing office inspects randomly and if you get sited 3 times for ANYTHING, ba-bye!! off base ASAP.
good luck to ya. the only real way to get things changed here....move off base.

I can't even imagine this being something that bothered me enough that I would post it on the Internet. I live in somewhat rural area and my neighborhood has absolutely no resrictions. At least the cars parked in your neighbor's driveway have wheels!

Story in the local paper -- a group of neighbors is suing one neighbor with a small farm. To keep deer away from the crops, they have a propane cannon rigged to fire randomly every 6 to 20 minutes. One neighbor measured 130 dB (louder than a jet engine) at his own house.
Think BOOM about BOOM that BOOM.

The fence is the obvious solution.
I live next door to two sets of white trash the last 7 years. Unfortunately, my deck is elevated just enough that I have to look at them everytime I walk out my sliding glass door. I have to plant some Leyland Cypress to get rid of them completely.

Smart man right there! Very smart!
Beleive it or not even in touchy feely Europe a good fence is said to be the way to good neighbors.
Build a fence, you'll get all of it back in peace of mind as well as when you finally sell your home.

My town only allows a max 6' fence. You can get around this by dropping some topspoil and building a berm but I have 190' of side property so it wasn't practical.
It's popular for neighbors to wait each other out so one side doesn't have to pay for the fence. I've seen families annoy each other for years waiting for the other side to pay!
In my case, I went and bought and installed my own fence with no help from the neighbors.
My neighbor was talking to me as I was installing my fence and when I installed the last section I cut him off mid sentence. It was awesome.

You live in a neighborhood of dramatically oversized homes. The cars you are grousing about are a fucking Saab and a fucking Lincoln for Pete's sake! Beautiful yards, massive homes, overpriced cars, and you are complaining.
Get some perspective...

A car on a lawn? CALL THE NATIONAL GUARD!
The trash thing would bug me, but hey, that sort of thing happens when you live close to others.

Yamatech, to give you some perspective on the real meaning of white trash you can take my place at my next family reunion.
I am the least white trash of the bunch, and I own cargo pants, camo print jeans, and a car that actually should be called a hooptie.

Trash all over the neighborhood should be reported to the Homeowners association. Or why not offer just build him a fence around the garbage so it will stay put?
Grass never being cut you can usually call the city or homeowners and they can be forced to cut it but you will always have to do this. Ticks love the long grass.
Cars on his grass lawn you will not be able to stop this unless the Homeowners association has rules against this.
Find out how much to drop off the battery for him. Find out when the hazardous trash day is and go over the night before and place it in the garbage for him. Or bring it to the dump.
It sounds like its worth it to you to offer to help out around the neighborhood once in the while for peace of mind. Try to get a neighborhood cleanup program going at the next homeowners association meeting. Or voice your concerns about this kind of stuff at the next meeting after all that is what it is there for.
Fences are very expensive. They will not be able to attach their fence to one you build if you keep your fence back from the property line some.

Good thing I live in the woods and not in one of these neighborhoods. I have 2 duck boats and rusting out pop-up trailer in my yard. Plus have 3 cars and a side car rig parked in my driveway. I have also been know to pee in my front or back yard, rather than go all the way back in the house.
GOD I LOVE LIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!

Most Bylaws will not allow you to put a fence in your front yard. But man sometimes that would be such a good idea if you could do it!
