I've lived down here for 4 months, and the city itself is beautiful.  Yes, some of the suburbs have areas that are still trashed and not very nice, but the  towns surrounding NOLA are nice.  I live in Belle Chasse, about 20 minutes south of the city and it's a nice, quiet area.
Oh, and there's a pretty sweet Triumph/Ducati dealer in the city!  Definitely not trashed!   Rolleyes

I lived there for 30yrs let me know if you want some company can meet you in Birmingham and I definetly know where to eat.As a matter of fact the owner of the Morning Call(they are a beignet place in Metairie)is a big sport touring, woods riding, enthusiast.

I did the ride this past Sunday. However, I only live ~100 miles from B'ham. Should get together and ride sometime...

Make sure you visit Cafe Du Monde for the Beignets.  That's all they sell, besides coffee and drinks, but they do them very well.  We tried some in other places and they are not even close.  The powdered sugar overload is enough to kill a borderline Diabetic.   Drool

By far better beignets & Cafa au lait can be found at the Morning Call. However they are  located in Metarie. The owner is an avid motorcylist and not a biker. Check out www.ridetoeat.com for a review and to see why they have a better product.

The best Jambalia in New Orleans is at a small hole in the wall called Coop's Place   1109 Decatur Street. It's in the eastern end of the Quarter, across the street from margaritaville.
They have a traditional recipie passed down through 3 generations. The stuff is awesome, its so good you just want to stuff yourself. Its also not very expensive.

If you'd like to have a more fancy / expensive meal go to Brennan's. Their Strawberries in heavy cream and Bananna's foster are amazing. Brennen's is also favous for their brunch, they have a good dozen or so variations on eggs benedict, all of which are wonderfull.

Lastly, the Gumbo shop 630 Saint Peter Street its near Jackson Square. Some of the best Gumbo I've ever eaten.

While not in NO. If you happen to head north on I55. When you get to Manchac, stop at Mittendorf's. They have extremely good fried catfish.

Jambalaya is how to spell it.

Shoot

I go through New Orleans all the time.   Outside of what the New Orlean Saints have done I don't see much good about the city.   Some of the infrastructure still has not been fixed.

All the money we gave that place.   Its a big joke.

but hey if you just want to get trashed and trade beads for boobs >> then maybe its a good place

On the flip side >>  You see the disaster in Nashville last summer with the severe flooding.   Those people took very little money from the government and they went out there on their own and raised funds and rebuilt the city on their own as quickly as possible.   This is how its done.   My hats off to the people from Central TN and Nashville.   Thumbsup
It is "The Chocoalte City". That is the biggest problem!

I was in New Orleans last January for 1 week.  While there we did one of the bus tours that takes tourists to the areas that were heavily flooded.  Tour driver was a lifetime resident and was one of the people that was pulling others out of the flooded areas in it's aftermath.  She was in no way smypithetic to the federal government, FEMA, or anyone from the outside, so she did not hesitate to take us to most any place, nor tell us what was really happening during the flood, and at the current time.  Many areas look good, but the houses are really not liveable because of mold.  Other areas look like they were nuked, then torn down.  But MOST of the city that we saw was really nice.  We took the opportunity one day to ride the trolley from the French Quarter all the way to it's end point.  Took us past Tulane University and beyond.  I found this area to be beautiful.  My wife had been down there before the flood.  She said that the downtown area looked the same.  My daughter had spent a week down there with Habitat for Humanity the summer before.  She saw places that before were completely destroyed coming back to life.  Now, none of this makes me any type of expert on the city, but I will say that I'd go back again without hesitation.  In fact, I do plan to return if only to re-visit the WWII museum.  I really feel that the city will come back.  When i was in high school, tornados completly destroyed Xenia, Oh and many parts of Dayton and Cincinnati.  20 years later you would never know.  Falmouth, ky was almost wiped off the map by flooding in the late 80's.  You can't tell it now.  Time, heart, effort, and not giving up will solve most any problem of this type.

Thanks Steve. If I was computer lit I would have done that.
Suffering over here in Houma, Louisiana eating these wannabe Beignets! Morning call is about an hour away but I do not like city driving if I can avoid it. Need to check in there. They always have a group of ST people gathered to ride there on Sunday mornings.
Stay safe but enjoy the ride.

Well damn...guess I'll have to plan another trip down there sometime soon.

Don't forget about Angelo Brocato's established in the French Quarter in 1905 . I went there today.  Fresh made Cannoli, Spumoni, Italian Biscotti, Tira Mi Su Cake, Sicilian Cassata Cake, and don't forget a fresh Italian Soda(Almond is my favorite). Lots of other candies and other artery clogging goodies. Do not limit yourself to the Quarter. Brocato like Morning Call has moved out of the Quarter. Now located at 214 North Carrollton Avenue, Nawlins.

Rajflyboy, I just joined this site, and my first step, after this post, is going to put you in the "Ignore" category.

I live in a New Orleans suburb, and my brother lives in Nashville.  He took me for a tour of the Nashville flooding.  While it was bad in Nashville for the people affected, the houses did not sit in water for a month, and the extent of flooding can not be compared...not at all!

People in both places suffered, and the suffering in New Orleans was from levee breaks, not from natural causes...people seem to forget that.

The Navy transferred me to New Orleans 10 1/2 years ago, and I stayed after retiring in 2003.  Have lived in every corner of the country and places in between...this is the friendliest, most pro-military area I've lived in.

Saw a reference to your denigrating Active Duty Military...guess that shows your colors.   Twofinger

Hell of a first post. I say let people think that way about New Orleans. Less douche bags I have to deal with when I visit there.

Sorry to start off that way!  I am opposed to flaming, but just couldn't let some comments go by without responding.  I am generally non-confrontational online because it is easy for forums to get nasty.

Everybody has their opinions and point-of-view, and the right to post them...I just don't have to read all of them.   Smile
